Dec. 29th, 2003 02:43 pmI'm at work. Today I attempted to read "House of Sand and Fog", but it's not holding my interest and I don't want to finish it.
I'm also reading a book about biotechnology.
Here are some arguments against the biotech industry-
1. The way the genetic material is introduced into the plant is often completely random and unpredictable. In some cases, it is shot into the gene, and is not easily controlled.
2. Some plants have been engineered to be herbicide resistant. However, the herbicide can seep into the plant, where it can be ingested by humans.
3. Some plants are designed to be poisonous to pests. However, the plants can mutate afterward, or infect other plants. You're supposed to keep some of your area pesticide free, but this is not being done.
4. The whole thing smacks of corporate control and threatens to wipe out the small farmer or small companies.
5. There hasn't been enough research done on the potential effects of any of this engineering.
