Two days ago, I watched 1930's best picture winner
All quiet on the Western Front . There were some things that I liked and things that I didn't. Some of the acting seems cheesy now, even though I am sure that it was good then. There were also a lot of parts that dragged. However, there were some particularly poignant scenes. I loved the scene where the returning soldier confronts his former teacher, and the hospital scenes. I think the movie did a great job of portraying some of the horrors and the disillusionment with the war. The special effects were also pretty advanced for the time period, and the final scene was excellent.
This movie was quite controversial for the time period. At screenings in Germany, it was booed and interrupted by troops due to its anti- war message. I think it may even have been banned in a few countries.
