Jan. 30th, 2006 03:04 pmOn Friday night, B* and I went to the Tinseltown to see "Eve and the Firehorse". The Tinseltown movie theatre is most likely my favourite movie theatre in Vancouver. It's comfortable and has good sounds and seats, and it generally isn't crowded. The Tinseltown is located in the Tinseltown mall, which is one of the saddest malls in North America. If you hail from Saskatoon, you'll understand the comparison when I tell you that Tinseltown is even more deserted and sadder than Bayside. Part of the reason the Tinseltown is so sad is because it is a luxury mall built in a very poor postal code. It was designed partially to push "undesirables" out of the area. As a result, no one frequents this mall and the businesses inside are dwindling.
However, on Friday, the mall was full of people celebrating Chinese New Year. There were booths set up all over, selling goods and promoting items and companies. There was a huge stage which featured entertainment. We were quite sad that we missed the tofu eating contest, which had been held at 5:30 earlier that day.
( talk about Eve and the Firehorse )

Jan. 30th, 2006 03:32 pmOn Sunday, I went for brunch and then [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and I went wandering around Chinatown in the rain. I noticed a version of the dragon dance that I'd never seen before. I have loved the dragon dance ever since I first saw it as a child. In this particular version, the dragon parades up and down the street. Shop owners hang a bunch of lettuce (called "pai") in front of their stores. The dragon reaches up and "eats" the lettuce. Upon finishing the lettuce, the dragon spits it back out and then sets off firecrackers. This is supposed to bring luck.
(I only know about this because of [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s mad Google skillz.)
Later on that day, we walked through a cloud of pepper spray at Granville Sky train station. I've never experienced pepper spray before and hope not to experience it again in the near future. It burned my eyes and throat and I coughed so hard that I was almost sick.

Good service deserves an entry
Jan. 30th, 2006 03:44 pmThis morning, I used the Vancouver Public Library's suggested purchase form to ask them to buy a copy of Self-made Man .
This afternoon, I received an email saying that the item had been ordered, and a hold had been placed for me.
Now that's service!
