Last night, I went to see Robot Stories , which is a film I've been wanting to see for a while. It came to Vancouver as part of the Vancouver Asian Film festival. I'd read good things about the film on Eurasian nation and Angry Asian man . This is filmmaker Greg Pak's first feature film, and it does not disappoint. The film's tagline is "Science fiction with heart", and I found that tagline to be extremely true. The film consists of four vignettes.
In "My Robot Baby"- a couple struggles to raise a robot child as if it is a human baby. This story was very creepy, but touching and effective.
"The Robot fixer" is the second story, and it had me in tears. In this story, an older woman must deal with the loss of her son. To deal with her grief, she begins collecting and finishing his collection of Microbots. This film was particularly moving due to the performance of the older woman, an Asian actress by the name of Wai Ching Ho. She was absolutely amazing.
"Machine Love" is a story about two robot I-persons who work in offices. It's a story about loneliness and alienation. Interestingly enough, both robots are played by mixed Asian/Caucasians. One of the robots is played by Greg Pak.
"Clay" was definitely my least favourite of the four. In this vignette, you can download your consciousness, and save it, even though your body dies.
"Robot stories" has been shown at film festivals all over the world and has won over 30 awards. It's a great film for many reasons. The vignettes run like well written short stories and the acting is incredible. Since it's a pet interest of mine, I must admit that I also enjoyed the number of bi-racial actors, and the ethnic diversity of the cast.
