Did anyone catch NBC's new show The Book of Daniel , last Friday?
It sounds like an interesting show. Aidan Quinn is Daniel Webster, an Episcopalian minister who is suffering from a crisis of faith. His son, played by Christian Campbell, has just come out. His daughter, played by Alison Pill, (Beth from "Pieces of April) is busted for dealing pot. And his other son, Adam, who is a trans-racial adoptee played by Taiwanese actor Ivan Shaw, is a horny little bugger who sleeps around.
Daniel also has conversations with Jesus and Yoda. Apparently the show has drawn criticism from the Christian right.
I might have to tune in...

Date: 2006-01-12 08:21 pm (UTC)i enjoyed it. it's not great, but there's some pretty funny stuff. with the actors they've assembled, it'll be excellent if they clean up some lazy writing. i really like aidan quinn, and you can't go wrong with ellen burstyn or dylan baker. plus, the kid who plays adam is hilarious. his line readings are priceless.
it's very much in the desperate housewives "suburban dramedy" genre, which isn't something that interests me very much, unless the writing is good.
the parts in which daniel talks to jesus are a bit lighter in tone than the rest of the writing (lots of minor-scale drug abuse, and a fair amount of homosexuality, which is already getting a bit old), but they're pretty clever, all the same.
it's not a must-see, but i'll certainly watch it again if i'm home. it's got a lot of potential, but i feel it'll get cancelled before too long.
