I was just about to leave work today when I got a phone call from a nice woman who had found my cell phone. I wasn't even aware that I had lost it, but it fell out of my pocket while I was taking a photograph in front of my house.

She was able to track me down by pressing the number which read "Parents." My mother was able to give her my work number, and emailed me with the woman's home phone number.

Let this be a lesson- it's a good idea to have something generic like "Parents", "best friend" or "work" in your phone.

Also in the "lessons learned" category, we learned that Lynne Spears, mother of Britney and Jamie-Lynne, is no longer releasing her parenting book and the launch has been postponed indefinitely. Go figure.

i totally agree-i've lost my cell phone at least twice, and have gotten it back because nice people have called the number marked "home" to let me know it had been found.

Oh the "home" idea is a good one. A few years ago here, the emergency departments (fire, police, etc.) tried to get people to use ICE (In Case of Emergency), but I don't think it caught on. I think I'm going to re-label my home number.

apparently jamie-lynne, who's only 16, is pregnant...which probably has a LOT to do with why her mom is postponing her book. nice. :P

i found someone's cell phone in a snow bank the other day! and yes, i called her dad, who gave me her email address. unfortunately, the phone had already been lost for a day or so, and she already bought another phone.

That's cool. The one time I lost my phone -- in Korea, it was -- I'd been teaching a camp thing. LONG days, little sleep, and so on. The kids at the camp gave me a set of homemade stickers that spelled out my name, "GORD" and put them on the phone.

So I left it in a cab. When I realized I'd lost it, an hour later, I called and some Korean lady answered. Lime helped me and talked to the lady, who wasn't really too hip to the idea of talking to someone who couldn't understand her normal, fast mode of speech, and anyway, it turned out some middle school boy had found it in the backseat of the cab, which he took home that night.

I was so thankful until I got the phone back. The little fucker had removed the "R" so that the stickers spelled out "GOD." I swear I would have yelled at him if he'd given the phone to me, and not his mother.

But this brings me around to... if you lose your phone, usually you can just call yourself. Or, if you find a phone, autodial 1 and you can talk to the person's most significant other -- usually boyfriend or girlfriend, but sometimes a best friend or parent.
