Thursday night, Amanda and I went to a downtown church to see a Joel Plaskett show. He was absolutely amazing, and it was a great concert. I need to get some of his albums now. It was good stuff.

Friday, I stayed home all day since Dad and Fergus were arriving. I sat on the couch reading. Once he arrived, Dad and I went to MEC, where Dad astounded me by only shopping there for half an hour, which is a record for him. Seriously, I was outside with a book while he was shopping, and was startled to see him so soon.

We checked out a Cajun restaurant that I wanted to try before taking Fergus for a walk. Fergus is doing pretty well in his new environment. In fact, it's nice to have him around, but I need to make sure that he doesn't bark or act up.

Dad and I also went to Ikea to get me a new bookcase. Unfortunately, I need someone to help me anchor it to the wall and that is proving to be a bit of a problem...

Last night I decided to go meet up with some friends at a pub. My friend has formed a group called BADASS (Bikes across Downtown and Selective South), and we go for Pintrides, which involve biking to pubs for drinks. I attended the second half of the ride, and met up for drinks.) It was good. I've really been getting out more, which is awesome.

I got back yesterday and have STUPID amounts of work to do today. I spent the day doing my taxes and am going to meet with my accountant on Friday. I also found out that I have to go out of town on Thursday. Well, I don't REALLY have to, but it will result in less work in the long run, so I'm going to do it.

Fortunately, I had a fantastic vacation. I generally just spent a lot of time hanging out with my mom and dad. We watched a lot of movies "When did you last see your father?" (which wasn't great except that you get to see Colin Firth touch himself in a bathtub), "Brick Lane" (okay), "Extreme Encounters at the End of the World" (great cinematography, a bit slow), and "Catch and Release" (it was on TV and was somewhat amusing.)

I also got to visit with my good friend Heather, play with Fergus, walk Fergus, cuddle Fergus and wrestle Fergus and attended an interesting session on Ecosystems Based Conservation Management hosted by my friend Pete. The session was done by Herb Hammond , who creates sustainable plans for development using a conservation and indigeneous based model. Basically, what he does is use a forest-like model and then plan development into the model, preserving diversity and fragile forest life. Economics is incorporated as one facet of the forest model. It's pretty interesting stuff, but hard for me to describe.

Since Dad was pretty much out of commission, Mom and I also went to our family friend's for a Friday Easter dinner. My holiday was well needed and well deserved, and now I'm back at the grind. Can't believe how busy I am already. Yikes.

Whee! I'm in Saskatoon! My friend/former co-worker came to Edmonton on Tuesday, right before my trapeze lesson. I went to my class and then came home and Ian and I watched "Young at Heart", which I completely recommend. Such a sweet movie.

Then we got up Wednesday morning to prepare for our cross-provincial drive. We ended up leaving at 11 am and didn't really stop for a long break the whole way. We stopped in Viking and Cut Knife to wander around, use facilities and take weird pictures, and we stopped in Wainwright so I could buy fresh BC apples and Ian could buy some beef jerky. We then drove to his sister's house and my mom picked me up from there. She then drove me home where I said hello to my dad, who was incredibly spacey as he had just had dental surgery and was sedated. He was pretty much out of it, which was a little freaky. We had an incredibly quiet evening. I've already taken Fergus for two walks and have just been hanging out at home. So nice and peaceful.

Well, I'm not really relaxing. I'm just enjoying the fact that I don't have to drive anywhere this week. Right now I'm catching up on stories that I should have written, doing laundry, writing random things and generally enjoying being at home.

Tonight I have to give a short poetry reading at local reading series.

The Oscars were really good. Mom and I phoned each other multiple times during the show.

1. I really loved Hugh Jackman's opening song thing.
2. I also loved the five presenters theme for the best supporting and best actor and actress categories.
3. There were a number of really good dresses and a number of horrible ones. What was up with Alicia Keyes' eyebrows? And my mom called me to comment on Sarah Jessica Parker's horrible fake boobs.
4. I loved the speech given by Devon Lance Black, the guy who wrote Milk. I was also touched by Heath Ledger's tribute.
5. Did anyone else think that it was horribly tacky that the camera cut to Angelina when Jennifer Aniston was at the mike? (It's over. Give it up. Who the hell cares any more?)
6. My mom called me to yell as Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens appeared onscreen. "Give them off the stage," she cried. I COULD NOT AGREE MORE. We want to see movie stars, people. Actual movie stars, wearing pretty dresses and accepting awards.
7. I wish Kate Winslet had won for "Revolutionary Road", but I was okay with her winning even though my vote was largely for Anne Hathaway.
8. I was also okay with Sean Penn's win, even though my vote was for Mickey Rourke.

Heavy stuff

A friend from University Days has been charged with killing a suspected Taliban member

So I'm back in Edmonton. I decided to drive back this morning and my brother decided to tag along at the last minute. He has some stuff to do, and likes to stay with me in E-town when he has a chance. Since we drove through a small snowstorm, it was nice to have him in the car to do the driving.

When I got home, I checked my email and my phone messages. My mom was the first to tell me, but a reporter from my hometown newspaper, the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, had also contacted me.

A friend from my university days has been charged with murdering a member of the Taliban. The reporter wanted me to comment on what I knew about Rob, and what he was like as a person. I know that many people would be completely hesitant to talk to the media, but as I am a journalist, I wanted to try to help the reporter.

I told him that I didn't want to say anything incriminating, but that I could tell him a bit about Rob and my friendship with him.

Rob was a very special person to me. We lost touch over 10 years ago, but he affected my life in many positive ways, and taught me a lot about friendship and bravery. I can still remember some of the things that he taught me about making people laugh, and about friendship. He was a good person, he had strong beliefs and opinions, and he was intelligent and in love with the military and the life of a soldier.

****
Personally, I am a bit floored by the whole thing. I feel a little discombobulated and out of it. I got a chance to talk to my mom, and [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] about it, and I feel a bit better now that I'm relaxing with a bowl of soup in my own kitchen. Still, it's shocking and unsettling.

I am ready to go back to Edmonton. My brother has this nasty plague and we actually sprayed the entire computer after he was done coughing his gross germs all over it. I really don't want this plague.

I am also feeling the need for my own space and routine. It has been a lovely visit, but I am starting to go a bit stir crazy and want to get home.

I have also been SLEEPING since I got home. We're talking hours of sleep, without any medication. This is fantastic, and I hope it continues when I get back to Edmonton.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I will be able to drive home before Thursday, due to the weather and winter storms. Thursday is still up in the air. I just need to keep on checking the weather reports and forecasts every day.

Haven't updated because I've been having a relaxing holiday. Seriously, if I were any more relaxed, I'd be comatose. The good news is that I have also been sleeping a lot. Yesterday I slept for 9 or 10 hours.

We also had the mellowest Christmas ever. My brother and his fiancee came for dinner on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day dinner was even more mellow. My parents and I didn't even have a turkey; they ate steaks and I ate a piece of salmon and then we watched "Burn after reading."

Since being home, I've watched "Burn after reading" (liked), "Wall-E" (liked) and Happy-Go-Lucky. (HATED). I also started watching Battlestar Galatica and have watched the first disc of Season 1. I'm in the middle of disc 2 now. I've written about ten poems, skated for an hour on the skating rink near the river where I watched two bridal parties and talked to a newly reunited Filipino family. I have spent countless hours cuddling with my dog and taking him for walks. He sleeps downstairs, but snuggles up on my bed in the early morning, placing his small body next to my feet.

I re-read "The Secret History" and started reading a few other books, which I am devouring slowly.

I went for coffee with [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and went to a boxing day party at the Celtic/treeplanter bar which was attended by half of my high school and dozens of treeplanters. I stayed out late, talked to people I hadn't seen in years and got tons of hugs. Then Prosad came over for tea and we talked until 3 am. It was wonderful.

So yes, so far it has been a lovely holiday.

Yesterday was a pretty intense day as I drove across frozen prairie for about five and a half hours. I was alone in my car for the entire trip. As a precaution, my parents told me to pack extra food, a sleeping bag and an emergency kit. I called them every time I stopped so they could track my progress. It's not a bad trip, but being cold and alone made it more dangerous.

I arrived home in time to hang out, eat salmon chowder and then go to an intergenerational Christmas party with family friends. I ate a boatload of cheese and drank a very strong punch that contained mostly vodka. These culinary delights reminded me way too much of Mongolia.

We came home before 10 at night and I stayed up reading until about midnight. I tried to sleep in this morning, and my sleep was helped by the fact that my mom put Fergus in my room and he cuddled up on the bed with me. He's becoming a very sweet little dog.

Today Dad and I went and did a bunch of errands together. We bought new cross-country skis for me! Very exciting.

I bought THE WORLD's BEST COAT yesterday. I was wearing it around the store before I purchased it, pretending I was in Dr. Zhivago. It is a long parka that comes down to my knees and it has a huge hood with fake fur on it. I am 100% in love with it.

My brother then showed up and took me to the West Edmonton Mall, which was crazy busy as we expected. We walked around and looked at people and things and generally had a really good time. We actually have a real friendship now, which is 100% awesome.

I couldn't fall asleep last night, which sucked. Today we got up early and went to the farmer's market where we bought a ton of stuff. He's out shopping today and I'm at home doing work, as it is too cold to go out and my brother has my car.

My brother called me at midnight to tell me that he was going to come crash on my couch this weekend. I don't know why he is coming into town, but I choose not to worry myself. Perhaps he wants to do some Xmas shopping.

Anyway, I am going to a Xmas party at the Vue magazine tomorrow night and going to see a dance show with Mari on Sunday. I may also go to a reading on Sunday night, but I'm not sure yet.

I have a lot to do today- Finish up my final assignment for food security class, and head to the Pork Science Centre. I was also going to try to get some shopping in, but that might not happen today because of my bro's visit.

I got back from Stettler at about 5:30 last night. Staying in a hotel was kind of nice. I had a leisurely drive down on Wednesday and checked into my motel. I had supper in a restaurant and then wandered around downtown. Stettler's nickname is "The Heart of Alberta" because it is in Central Alberta. It's obviously got an oil and gas industry and I saw a lot of big trucks.

The sheep seminar was interesting. It was held in a big rec complex with a library, arena, and swimming pool. About 98 people attended the seminar. I ended up sitting next to a nice couple, who generously answered any questions I had. We sat through a variety of seminars, one about a new food safety program, and another about coyote attacks. I learned the various ways that coyotes attack different animals, which I found completely interesting.

There was one complete wingnut at the sessions. In one lecture, he commented on how the Canadian
N*gg*rs were obviously bringing money down south. There was an audible gasp from the audience. In another session, he commented on his fear that bits of Chinese tapeworm would infect Chinese dogfood and mutate on Canadian shores. I had a hard time not looking horrified and shook my head every time he opened his mouth. Fortunately, I was not alone in my feelings, and I could share sympathetic glances with others in the room.

A few days ago, I watched "Control", the bio-pic about Joy Division. I thought it was a great bio-pic and it's got me interested in Joy Division. Yeah, I missed out on them, but at least I'm on the bandwagon now.

My family and family friends are attending the huge gala for Bikes for humanity in Saskatoon. I thought about going, but it's a long drive and costs me a lot of time and money to go. I'm trying to find a few fun things to do this weekend, which is good. I think it may be a peaceful recharging weekend, which I welcome.

I'm watching the election results and had to turn it off because it was making me feel ill. I'm wondering who all these Conservatives are, as I know a lot of people and few, if any of them, voted Conservative. It makes me wonder.

Let's talk about something else. I had a wonderful visit home. I picked up my brother on Friday and we drove home. My parents made us a lovely supper and my Dad, my bro and the bro's gf went to see "Body of Lies" Friday night. It was pretty good, but not amazing. Leo had skeevy facial hair and brown contacts and Russell Crowe had gained at least 25 pounds.

On Saturday, my dad and I went for lunch and then I came home and did some work and went shopping for pants. My bro cooked an Asian supper for the entire family and his gf. He made tempura shrimp, beef satay, stir fried veggies, duck and Chinese greens with garlic. My bro is a pretty amazing cook who doesn't get a lot of opportunity to use his culinary skills. We also enjoyed some wine, which was pretty awesome.

Sunday I stayed home for most of the day and then we went to a family friend's house for Thanksgiving supper. It was quite the event as more than 25 people were present. [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] was in town working the election, so I sprang her for a little bit and she joined us, which was cool. I got to visit with a lot of my extended family friends, and then I drove her back to the place where she was staying and we got to catch up a bit.

Monday I went for coffee with my friend Heather and then went to see "The Duchess" with my mom and her friend. This film is really quite well done, and will probably get Oscar nominations. Keira Knightley was fantastic, as was Ralph Fiennes. It's also an interesting story, with good acting and beautiful scenery and set design. If you're at all into period pieces, I would highly recommend this one. I liked it more than I expected to.

I spent the night at home, watching tv and hanging with my little dog. I spent a lot of time with Fergus, who is becoming quite the sweet little dog. He just likes to hang out and cuddle, and we went for a few walks over the weekend. I'm hoping he can come visit me soon. This morning, I called his name while I was lying in bed, and he came running up the stairs, jumped on the bed and then snuggled in for a little nap with me. He's becoming a very affectionate little guy as he gets older.

I drove home today and did the entire trip in less than six hours. It's nice to be back in my own space, even if I've got a lot to do the next couple of days. I'm going to a poetry reading tomorrow night, which should be fun.

Yesterday I got an email from my Uncle Bob. Uncle Bob is a retired soldier, who was very high up in the military. He is possibly one of my favourite Conservatives ;)

Anyway, Uncle Bob emailed me to tell me that he and my aunt, who are in their 70s, were inspired by my Oscar project, and recently completed watching all the Oscar winning films, including four that they had to order because they weren't available in Victoria. He has offered to send me "Cavalcade" which I was unable to find in Canada. I will have to watch it on my computer, as it is in a format used for European DVDs.

I think this is cute, and I'm incredibly touched.

Mom and I had a lovely day yesterday. She went to the market and I did a bunch of freelance related writing pieces. Then she came back and we ate market veggies for supper, including spaghetti sauce, new potatoes and broccoli. After that, we walked to the art theatre to see "Vicky Christina Barcelona", which I would highly recommend. Both of us liked it a lot more than we expected to. It's funny and rings true and the dialogue is excellent.

I fell asleep at 10:30 and ended up sleeping for 9 hours. This was miraculous and almost unheard of!

Today I also had a lovely day. Mom and I had coffee and breakfast together before she left. After reading for a bit, I walked down to the refugee camp in the heart of the city. If the refugee camp comes to your city, please go check it out. It's a free exhibit put on by Doctors without Borders. People who have actually worked with Doctors Without Borders take you on a tour of a simulated refugee camp. It's educational, informative and very moving and you can ask all sorts of questions. I learned an incredible amount from the tour, and would encourage anyone to take it.

After this, I went for a long walk and walked downtown. I ended up going for a fantastic brunch at a little place called "The 9th street bistro". I ate French toast with Grand Marnier syrup, a fruit skewer and mango juice. Then I explored some streets downtown, went to the downtown library and took the bus back home. Now I'm going to do some editing, read and maybe watch a movie.

Mom and I went to the West Edmonton mall yesterday. I honestly haven't been to the mall in at least 12 years. After yesterday's visit, I don't think I'll be going again for a long time. This is one of the biggest malls in North America, and it spans several city blocks. It's the only mall I've been in that has a hotel, a water park, an amusement park, a golf course and a skating rink, anyway. We wandered around, and did do a bit of shopping and even bought a few things.

I was appalled by the petting zoo camel, who couldn't even stand up inside its pen. It was completely disgusting. Unfortunately, the mall has a pretty sad record for animal cruelty, as they had dolphins in there for years. People have been protesting their marine parks since they started having animals in there, and nothing has ever been done. It's really pitiful.

After our visit to the giant behemoth of shopping, we went for Thai food and then came home and watched "The Band's visit" which is a really cute movie about an Egyptian band who ends up in the a small town in Israel. It's sweet, funny and very heart warming and I highly recommend it. Today Mom is out on the town, leaving me to catch up on some of the writing that I have to get done for Monday.

Not much

Really, not much is happening. I have not been sleeping again. There were two days of sleep and then insomnia again. Last night it was my own fault. I started an addiction memoir. I've learned the hard way that if I start reading an addiction memoir before I go to bed, I'm likely to stay up late reading it.

It has been very warm here, which is nice. I've been spending a lot of time at home, working. Yesterday I went out to a garden outside of town, to talk to a guy who harvests and collects native seeds.

Today mom is coming to visit for the next few days.

After the massive trip to Ikea, Dad and I returned home to put some of the Ikea stuff together. We easily assembled four chairs, and then made a stir fry and ate dinner. Then we started assembling my new bed, but had to stop because we were convinced we had lost the pieces. I had to call off a breakfast meet-up with Courtney, so that Dad and I could go back to Ikea and get the pieces. We thought they were missing from the box, but it turns out that they were sold separately. Damn you Ikea!

Anyway, so back to the house where we assembled the bed, and the dresser. Then we drove to Calgary as I had to go for a meeting and Dad was going to meet up with his friend Duane. We arrived in Calgary at about 7:30 p.m. and ate some Indian food Duane had ordered from take out.

The next day, Dad, Duane and I went to MEC, where Dad bought me a whole bunch of bike repair gear so that I could keep my bike in good shape. Duane then drove me to [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s mom's, so that we could meet up. She had organized and scheduled the trip so that we could hang out in Calgary.

I am back and am online and mostly coherent. The whole process was long and exhausting.

1. Dad arrived at about 7:30 p.m. on July 29th. We ate supper and then he went and stayed in a hotel.

2. On July 30th, we picked up my trailer. I was worried that not everything would fit, but we ended up having a lot of room. We filled the trailer in two hours, then spent the rest of the day cleaning.

3. We left Grande Prairie bright and early on July 31st. The drive was non-eventful for me, but Dad's battery died and he was stuck in Whitecourt for several hours.

4. August 1st- We carried everything out of the trailer and returned it in Edmonton. We then unpacked boxes for the rest of the day. For some reason, I was absolutely exhausted.

5. August 2- More unpacking, followed by a trip to Ikea. Dad hadn't been to Ikea in years and was stunned by the sheer amount of stuff in the store. I pushed him through and ended up buying a bed frame and mattress, a new dresser, four chairs, and a sofa bed. Yes, I spent a lot of money. We assembled the chairs and then started on the bed until we ran into a problem.

(more later)

Today I'm just sitting in a pile of boxes, waiting for my father to arrive from Saskatoon. Tomorrow we will get the trailer, load everything up and then clean. We head to Edmonton on Thursday morning.

This morning, I woke up and took out my trash, only to find out that there had been some graffiti vandals in the neighbourhood. They spray painted "KKK" on my landlord's vehicle, and had graffitied and drawn some pictures of erect penises on other homes and vehicles in the neighbourhood, all the way up to the downtown. I was pretty disgusted. (And yes, the penises did remind me of "Superbad".)

Yesterday I packed and then went to visit my friends Tanya and James and their daughter Imogen. Imogen is about nine months old, so she's at the fun baby stage and is babbling, crawling, cuddling etc. I had supper with them and then came back to do some more reading/movie watching.

I also found out that I got into my first food security class, which is one less thing for me to worry about.

My new job

Most people know this already, but I seem to have a multitude of readers who I don't actually know, so-

Here's my news-
I'm moving (again). I will be leaving Grande Prairie at the end of July to move to Edmonton. In Edmonton, I will be working for "Alberta Farmer Express", covering agriculture for Edmonton and the surrounding counties. "Alberta Farmer Express" is a provincial bi-weekly newspaper that goes throughout rural Alberta. I'll be working out of a home office, and am allowed to freelance as I see fit. I'm really excited about my new position, but will miss the people of Grande Prairie and my job here. Still, I'm looking forward to being in a larger centre, and being closer to my parents, who are still in Saskatoon. My decision to take this job is also part of a decision to start specializing in agriculture. There are few agricultural reporters, and I foresee a lot of demand for good reporting on the topic, as the food crisis and food issues continue to grow and develop. I'm really excited about the possibility of combining a knowledge in agriculture with my background in international development. In order to improve my knowledge, I'll be enrolling in a distance education course on Food security, hosted at Ryerson University.
